What Are the Different Types of Air Conditioners?

Central Air Conditioners (Ducted)

A central air conditioner is a ducted cooling system that distributes cooled air throughout the home using existing ductwork. It typically works with a furnace and is commonly used in detached and semi-detached homes where consistent, whole-home cooling is needed.

Mini-Split Air Conditioners (Ductless)

A mini-split air conditioner is a ductless cooling system designed to cool individual rooms or zones without ductwork. These systems are well suited for condos, older homes, additions, or spaces without ducts, offering flexible and targeted comfort.

FAQs

What Type of Air Conditioner Is Best for a Canadian Home?

The best air conditioner for a Canadian home depends on factors such as home size, layout. Cooling needs can vary between detached homes, condos, and apartments, so choosing the right system helps ensure comfort and efficiency.

  • Central air conditioners (ducted) – Best for homes with existing ductwork, offering even, whole-home cooling.
  • Ductless mini-split systems – Ideal for condos, older homes, additions, or spaces without ducts, providing zoned cooling.

A professional assessment helps determine which option best suits your home’s structure, comfort needs, and cooling usage.

Yes, an air conditioner helps reduce indoor humidity as part of the cooling process. When warm air passes through the system, excess moisture is removed, which helps the home feel cooler and more comfortable during hot weather. Air conditioners are designed to remove humidity and heat from your home, making it more comfortable during the summer months.

Most air conditioners in Canada last between 12 and 15 years, depending on system type, usage, and maintenance. Homes that rely heavily on-air conditioning during hot summers may experience more wear over time. Regular maintenance, such as cleaning, inspections, and timely repairs, helps maintain efficiency and can extend the overall lifespan of the system.

Air conditioning systems work by removing heat from indoor air and releasing it outside. warmer from inside the home is drawn into the system, the
heat is removed and then circulated back into the living space. This process helps maintain a comfortable indoor temperature during hot weather.

Modern air conditioners are designed to cool efficiently while managing electricity use. By running in steady cycles  they help maintain consistent comfort throughout the home without unnecessary energy waste.

The price of a new air conditioner depends on several factors, including the system type, cooling capacity, brand, and installation requirements. Costs can vary based on whether the home uses a central ducted system or a ductless setup, as well as the size and layout of the space being cooled.

LG Home Comfort offers flexible purchase options that make owning an air conditioner more predictable and convenient than renting. A professional in home consultation is recommended to get an accurate quote for your home.
